Who qualifies for the free Google IT Support certificate?

Straight answers on eligibility, cost, time commitment, and equipment — before you apply.

The short answer

  • No degree required
  • No prior IT experience required
  • No cost to apply or enroll
  • About 8 hours a week for 4–6 months
  • Open to career changers, students, and veterans

Who is eligible for the Google IT Support certificate?

Anyone. There are no degree, age, or experience requirements. You need a computer with internet access and roughly 8 hours a week to study. Our guided program is open to career changers, students, veterans, caregivers returning to work, and people currently in non-technical jobs.

Is the Google IT Support certificate really free?

The coursework can be completed at no cost through financial aid or a sponsored seat, and our guided program adds mentorship, a cohort, and career coaching at no charge. You are never asked for a card to apply.

Do I need IT experience or a college degree?

No. The certificate is designed as an entry point and starts from the fundamentals of help desk support, networking, operating systems, system administration, and security. Most learners in our cohorts come from outside technology.

How long does it take to finish?

About 180 hours of coursework. At 8 hours a week most learners finish in 4 to 6 months. Some finish in under 3 months studying full time, and that is fine — the plan is built around your schedule.

Do I need to live in the United States?

The certificate itself is available internationally. Our guided support runs in English on US Eastern Time hours, so learners outside those time zones should expect asynchronous mentorship.

What equipment do I need?

A laptop or desktop computer (Windows, macOS, or Linux) and a reliable internet connection. A phone or tablet alone is not enough to complete the labs. Tell us on your application if equipment is a barrier.

What jobs can this certificate lead to?

Common first roles are IT support specialist, help desk technician, desktop support analyst, and junior systems administrator. It is also a foundation for CompTIA and Microsoft certifications, which we also offer.

Can I do this while working full time?

Yes. The coursework is self-paced and the vast majority of our learners study around a job or family responsibilities. Your mentor helps you set a pace you can actually keep.

What happens after I apply?

Our team reviews your application and follows up by email to schedule a short intake call. On that call we confirm your goals and schedule, then get you started with certificate access, a mentor, and a study plan.

Still have a question about eligibility?

Apply anyway — the intake call is the fastest way to get a definite answer, and applying costs nothing.
